Workshop 2A: Teaching In Resonance
Thursday July 9, 2026 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
As educators, we value and curate our course content. As Quaker educators, we strive to bring every student into community, with integrity, while nurturing their individuality. Resonance, the scientific concept, refers to an efficient exchange of energy. Resonant Teaching refers to the idea that students learn best when in a purposeful relationship with their teacher; they intentionally seek to know one another, or, to Quakers, seek one another’s Light Within. We offer Resonant Teaching as a framework for merging these two important tasks of true learning and true connection. We believe that when resonance is achieved, teaching and learning seem to propel themselves forward. We will explore strategies for taking the purposeful craft of resonating with students from the mystical and metaphorical to the actionable.

*This workshop will also be held Friday, July 10 8:30-9:30AM (Workshop 4).*

Workshop 2B: Moments That Matter: Navigating Classroom Interactions Through a Quaker Lens
Thursday July 9, 2026 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
In Quaker education, how we respond matters just as much as what we teach. This interactive workshop invites educators to explore reflective practice through real classroom scenarios, thoughtful discussion, and practical pause strategies rooted in Quaker values. Together, we will examine moments of tension, conflict, equity, and belonging while considering how intentional reflection can lead to more grounded, compassionate, and values-centered responses. Participants will leave with adaptable tools and reflective practices that can strengthen classroom culture, deepen community, and support meaningful relationships in schools.

Workshop 2C: Peace Path: A Protocol for Conflict Resolution
Thursday July 9, 2026 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Our Peace Path protocol/routine is designed to support students in resolving conflicts independently. Our goal is to make the process, thinking, and conversation around a conflict or unsteady interaction one that is sensitive to both sides of a story, is simple enough for our young students to eventually manage independently, and responsive to the developmental needs of our students. The path is made up of stones that have simple and beautiful designs of a plant growing from seed to flower, representing the steps we are taking to help us reach a peaceful resolution. In this interactive session, we will share our experiences using this tool and explore scenarios together.

Workshop 2E: Beyond the SPICES: Developing a Faith and Practice to Affirm Your School’s Mission
Thursday July 9, 2026 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
The SPICES acronym has long helped Quaker schools highlight core testimonies and values, but does this distillation fully reflect what is central to your school’s mission, priorities, and daily practice? This session shares the process DVFriends School undertook to develop its own Faith and Practice, including core testimonies and queries, to more fully reflect its identity as both a Quaker school and a school for students who learn differently. Participants will explore the rationale for this work at this moment in the School’s history, how the Quaker Life Committee led a collaborative process of discernment and development, and how the resulting Faith and Practice is being used with students, faculty, staff, and trustees to deepen a shared understanding of Quaker identity. Participants will engage with selected testimonies and queries from DVFriends and consider how similar work might take shape in their own school communities.

Workshop 2G: Teaching the Soul in the Age of Meta
Thursday July 9, 2026 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
Social media invites a curated persona and relies on external validation while the digital noise of constant stimulation deprives our brains of the silence necessary for deep listening and centering down before worship. Furthermore, a systemic dilution of Quaker education into social media-ready "values" or "SPICES" leaves students and teachers without the practices needed to navigate academic stress, anxiety and a general crisis of well-being. Most Upper School students at my Quaker school are so overwhelmed by the extrinsic demands of the college process that they do not participate in soulful engagement during meetings for worship. In fact, they sometimes resent being forced to take a break from the studying that could lead to their definition of success. There are colleagues too who wish they could have that extra time correcting assessments and preparing for class. The tyranny of perfectionism and its accompanying fear of vulnerability make true self-knowledge and compassion for oneself and others feel more like a risk than a prerequisite for a life of meaning and purpose. To what extent is our performance-based culture and our over-scheduled screen-filled lives causing a profound atrophy of our Spirit-filled soulscapes? And what can we do to elevate the soul's importance in our competitive winner-take-all world? There is no single answer, of course. But finding ways to slow down, to enter into silence, embrace nature, inculcate deep listening, discuss love and friendship, lift up our own weaknesses, applaud student kindness and caring, and engage in Spirit-led inquiry and worshipful sharing can at least help to nurture our ever receptive and redemptive Inner Light.

Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
A school's mission statement is more than just marketing—it is a covenant of our shared values. How does your school’s mission statement move off the wall and into the daily lives of your students? In this interactive workshop,  we will collaborate to bridge the gap between high-level ideals and daily reality. We will begin with a brief reflection on the core purpose of a mission statement, followed by a dynamic "gallery walk" to analyze how our schools articulate their values. The session culminates in the introduction and collaborative trialing of a "Mission Rubric," offering educators a clear, measurable tool to ensure our decisions and programming faithfully reflects our mission.

Workshop 3B: Friends Education for Our Most Complex Learners
Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
Seeing the Inner Light in every child takes on extra significance for complex learners such as those with learning differences.  Merging Quaker values with well-trained expertise in understanding and teaching these complex learners is often life-changing.  In this session, we’ll start by looking at how to recognize and appreciate learning challenges, including those you might see in “neurotypical” schools. You’ll hear from three Quaker LD (Learning Difference) schools: Delaware Valley Friends School, Stratford Friends School, and The Quaker School at Horsham.  We’ll discuss how we use our dual missions to support these exceptional students, and we’ll share some best practices that can improve the learning of all students, regardless of profile or diagnosis.  We’ll focus particularly on Executive Functioning strategies that our expert faculties use and that you can take with you for your students.

Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
This interactive workshop explores how Quaker values and DEI practices can work together to deepen and strengthen organizations, schools, faith communities, and civic spaces. Drawing on core Quaker testimonies, participants will examine how these principles offer both a moral foundation and practical strategies for DEI Departments to cultivate more inclusive and equitable spaces.

Through reflection, dialogue, scenarios, and shared inquiry, participants will consider how Quaker approaches to listening, discernment, consensus-building, and recognizing “that of God in everyone” can partner with DEI practices to challenge systems of exclusion and support authentic belonging.

Workshop 3E: The Digital Meetinghouse: Student Journalism as a Catalyst for Civil Discourse
Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
In an era of political polarization, Quaker schools face the challenge of maintaining a cohesive community while honoring the Light in each individual. This session invites Quaker educators to consider the role of student journalism as a vital “public square” for institutional health. Using Abington Friends School’s student newspaper, The Blue and White, as a case study, we will explore how moderated online comment sections can transform potentially toxic digital spaces into venues for authentic Quaker practice. Curated prompts, modeled on the New York Times Learning Network’s Student Opinion questions, invite upper school students to engage in respectful disagreement and discernment on issues ranging from campus life to global ethics. This practice offers a window into student sentiment and a proactive tool for civic education. In one example, student discourse sparked a new faculty committee and evolved school practices, proving that a well-moderated digital forum can lead to constructive institutional growth. The session will transition into an interactive dialogue, inviting participants to examine the function of journalism in their own schools. We will discuss how student media can serve as a catalyst for community-wide civil discourse.

Workshop 3F: What is an Emotional Well-Being Program?
Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
An Emotional Wellbeing Program is a set of attitudes and practices which support optimal personal and interpersonal functioning at the Friends Center.

All staff participate in making this program work, through the way they develop the curriculum in their unique classroom, learn to support one another through the strenuous demands of high quality early childhood care, and engage with families in these areas of awareness.

We are attentive to how trauma can interrupt natural physical, mental and emotional growth processes. Our aim is to recognize the effects of adverse childhood experiences on children and to counterbalance those effects. Likewise, we recognize the residual effects of individual and cultural trauma on the adults in our community. We impart possible pathways to healing and life-long learning, leaning into partnerships with other community services.
Establishing and maintaining a sense of community among teachers and families at an early childhood center is a critical component of fostering emotional well-being among both adults and children. Nurturing strong relationships and creating a culture of open communication enables the staff community to connect on a personal level, fostering a sense of acceptance, belonging, and understanding, as well as the opportunity to forge and maintain meaningful relationships.

Creating a community of belonging allows staff members to feel acknowledged and appreciated for their unique qualities. The resulting positive and inclusive atmosphere enhances collaboration and ultimately leads to better outcomes for everyone within the community. Our ability to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate our emotions as it relates to our past experiences, present needs and future selves speaks to the power that emotional regulation/intelligence has on leaders, educators and our youngest learners.

Attendees will have the opportunity to create a group charter, engage in Self-reflection through queries, and scenario work through role-playing.

Workshop 3G: Separating the Wheat from the Chaff (Threshing Protocol)
Thursday July 9, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm EDT
Goals for Today-Exploring Quaker Protocols-Threshing
To deepen Quaker practices in our teaching and learning, and in how we engage with one another as a community. Engaging in a Quaker Protocol as a community is one way we can serve that goal.

What is "Threshing"?
"Threshing" means separating the "wheat from the chaff" and working toward collective discernment of a way forward. Quakers use threshing, usually in advance of decision-making or discussion on a topic that might be controversial or difficult.

GOALS include
to explore a topic using a protocol that encourages all voices and that leads to deepening focus on aspects of common interest;
to gain practice using this protocol with colleagues;
modeling a collegial learning practice;
to emphasize the importance of both sharing and listening
to gain practice in following the protocol so all have a turn.

What Threshing is NOT
We are NOT trying to come to any conclusions or resolutions, rather use protocol to gain clarity to help with further decision making.
